LACK of family, religious value and p arntal control swear be described as the main causes for the disintegration in moral values among youths today, according to a working pen report entitled Social Issues: The Deterioration of young person righteouss by Datin Hjh Adina Othman, Director of the Community Development segment (Japem) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports. The working paper was presented by Datin Hjh Adina during the Fiqh Semasa seminar which took government agency yesterday daybreak at Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD). Among the numerous factors stated in the paper for the constipation of morals among the youth, such as need of religious fosterage and appreciation and peer pressure, a dysfunctional family were stated as the leading causes. With last years figure of 242 cases of immature pregnancies and 439 divorcement cases in 2006, the climb in the statistics of teenage pregnancies and divorce rate in the country indicate a decline in f amily values and parental control and an increase in dysfunctional families. Japem has also identified 158 domestic cases from 2004 to 2006 involving domestic personnel and child abuse. The amount continue with studies from the Taman Noor Hidayah, the government-sponsored womens shelter and rehabilitation centimere, which houses 39 abused women infra the age of 20.

Research shows that 74 per cent of these 39 cases arrange from dysfunctional families, of which almost all are Malay Muslim families. With this, Datin Hjh Adina stressed the importance of family and parental role as a means of addressing the youth moral issue.
